Thurs Feb 16 (space for 1 or 2 more)

Private courses are available every day, of course.

The intermediate class is generally for those who have completed the intro to ice course or the equivalent, or for those who have significant rock climbing experience but have yet to try ice. Generally this course involves an ascent of a multi-pitch ice climb such as the Standard Route at Frankenstein Cliff or Cinema Gully on Mt. Willard.

In this course we'll further hone your ice climbing technique, with an important emphasis on the idea of the self belay. The self belay is simply placing your tool so securely that you can essentially rely on it as a belay for keeping you attached to the ice. You will also learn about rope work and anchor building. We'll teach you how to "read" the ice, to see the weaknesses where tools want to stick and also to learn the places where the ice is weak and prone to break. You'll learn how to place and remove screws properly and efficiently, and I’ll teach you how to build and equalize a solid anchor. We'll also go over the all important subject of how to get down. You'll learn how to place v-threads and we’ll talk about when it might be necessary to use two v-threads and many other tricks for rapelling safely.
